Remember when a game with the 'open-world' title was the most enticing prospect out there? The very idea of a game with an entire world to get immersed in was like a gift from the responsibility-dodging Gods, and something every gamer more than took up the offer of when drinking in everything GTA III had to offer back in 2001. Thanks to Rockstar's magnum opus that turned the industry on its head, the genre is now one of the most common around - a truly established pillar of gaming, and one of the most bankable prospects alongside first-person shooters and 3D platformers. The structure of this template consisting of scattered quest-givers and a free-wheeling purpose that rewards you for exploring outside your main mission structure has leant itself to everything from the phenomenal Jak II: Renegade to those that would've worked better as linear experiences like L.A. Noire, showing that some properties turn out better than others. Looking forward you might already be aware of a few big-hitters on the horizon, but it's worth taking stock of which are also packing out 2015's roster, looking to provide their own unique spin on the genre whilst retaining enough elements to bring in a much wider audience.
