It's been a bit of a weird year for video games. Unlike the blistering pace of 2017, 2018 featured a hectic start and finish, but a whole load of nothing in the middle, where new games were about as rare as making it through a forrest in Red Dead Redemption 2 without barrelling straight into a tree.

Still, the past 12 months will be remembered as being home to some of the biggest releases of the entire generation. Between the aforementioned Red Dead, God of War, Spider-Man, Monster Hunter, Celeste and Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, some of the decade's best critical darlings dropped across 2018. On the other hand, some of the generation's biggest disappointments also limped onto shelves in between this orgy of greatness.

From high-profile sequels that could tarnish entire franchises going forward, to some of the most broken, buggy, garbage fires that somehow only got worse as patches tried to fix them, while some developers reached higher heights than ever before in 2018, others suffered a pretty major fall from grace.
