For modern gamers, there's no succession of letters that regularly inspire despair than DLC. In the past decade, paid downloadable expansions have become something of a sore issue as many players have begun to feel that they are being exploited by developers in favour of extended profit periods for new games.

In the earliest days of downloadable content it was always perceived that the extra levels or new areas that players could add to their core game were genuine enhancements: added extras or bonuses, if you will. Now, however, unfortunate phenomenons like 'Day One DLC' have led to the perception that some developers are shipping a mere percentage of their new game in retail editions and that the paid "extra content" should've been an inclusion under the RRP.

We could debate the merits of these criticisms until we're blue in the face, but why would we want to depress ourselves? It's summer, after all, and we should be focusing on much happier topics! Sticking with the DLC theme, it's time we gave some props to the developers whose stellar examples of expansion content are genuinely worthy of praise and - more importantly - worth spending your hard-earned cash on.
