But every so often developers hide secrets within their games or make reveals about their beloved titles which only leave most fans upset and disturbed.

These games all dared to tout surprising truths which caused fans to re-evaluate much of what they thought they knew, in some cases taking a totally innocent experience and injecting it with something completely, needlessly terrifying.

Even the more horror-centric entries on this list got a major boost of creepy due to these little-known secrets, most of which at least have the decency to be relatively well hidden.

In extreme cases, however, you won't ever be able to think about each game the same way again, as there's no way anyone will be able to un-think these secrets once they become known.

10. Toad's "Hat" Is Actually His Head - Mario

There are many mysteries which Nintendo has left fans to debate over the years, but perhaps none as perversely compelling as the noggin of Mario's beloved pal Toad.

Fans have fiercely argued for literally decades about whether the toadstool on top of Toad's head is a hat or actually part of his head.

Well, in 2018 Super Mario Odyssey producer Yoshiaki Koizumi provided a definitive, canonical answer in a Q&A video, where he categorically confirmed that it isn't a hat, but indeed part of his head. Koizumi added:

"I’m going to have to leave it to all of you to figure out exactly how that works out. Maybe there's something inside."

Nintendo fans who assumed they were looking at a hat were both horrified and outraged, especially as the 1980s Super Mario Bros. cartoon - which, admittedly, isn't canon - suggested it was indeed a fashion item.

Sometimes the only sane solution is to adhere to your own head-canon, and this is clearly one of those times #TeamHat
