From zero to hero!

Let’s be honest: when it comes to video game companions, not all characters are created equal. Some have better stats than others, some have better personalities, and some are simply more interesting.

However, sometimes the unassuming benchwarmers in your squad may be more than they appear to be at first glance. Although they start off with terrible stats and easily forgettable traits, if you just give them some time to grow and develop, they can become the best and most powerful characters in your roster.

Everyone loves a good underdog story, and although not every terrible character has a chance to prove themselves, there are still plenty of examples of companions in games that start off weak but become ridiculously strong as you spend more time leveling them up. They all possess unique traits that allow them to outdo everyone, despite their initial setbacks.

The following characters are waiting for you to discover their hidden potential. All you have to do is give them a chance.

10. Donnel - Fire Emblem: Awakening

The fantasy world of Fire Emblem features mages, wyverns, pegasus knights, and people turning into dragons. So naturally, the most powerful character you can employ in your merry band of godlike beings is a random peasant wearing a pot for a helmet.

Donnel is a character in Fire Emblem: Awakening that the player can recruit if they manage to keep him alive during a bandit raid early in the game. It sounds easier said than done, as Donnel can barely survive two enemy attacks, and his spear's damage output might as well heal the bandits he attacks.

Things don't get much better once Donnel officially joins your team. It takes a lot of training for him to catch up with the rest of your squad; however, once he does, he quickly becomes one of the most powerful units on your roster.

Despite his initial low stats, Donnel has one of the greatest and fastest stat growths of any character in the game. This means that Donnel can outperform most of your unit before he even gets promoted to his secondary class.

But best of all, Donnel never loses the dented pot on his head, even after he turns into an indestructible killing machine.
