It's fair to say that 2014 wasn't exactly a banner year for video games, what with so many AAA titles such as Watch Dogs, Destiny and Halo: The Master Chief Collection disappointing for numerous reasons, and the three new consoles from Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony didn't really manage to make much of a dent. Still, if you forget the various controversies about frame-rates, resolutions, connectivity issues and Gamergate, there were certainly plenty of great games released last year, a number of which you likely wouldn't have expected. These 13 games, whether absurdly silly indie games, sequels and spin-offs many dismissed without even playing, or titles that were released practically broken before being fixed months later, all ended up being hugely underrated, their quality far exceeding what the Metacritic score and muted online discussions seems to say about them. These are the games that, on the face of it, you might not give a second look to on the basis of their premise, their low-key nature or some mixed reviews, but if you actually give them a chance, you'll find something that just might prove surprisingly entertaining.
