As if it needed to be stated again, 2017 has been this generation's landmark year. Phenomenal new systems like the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One X, period-defining releases including one of the best Marios in years, indie masterclasses like Hellblade and even, possibly, maybe, the new best game of all time: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

All that said, the higher the bar of overall quality, the more those who can't clear it stand out. We've seen the games industry come into an entire new realm of proficiency showcasing the likes of DOOM, The Witcher 3 and Metal Gear Solid V, but that has the knock-on effect of making every other developer and publisher combo up their game.

Attempting a fantasy open-world RPG? You'll be going up against CD Projekt RED's finest. A superhero-esque shooter? Overwatch will eat you alive. Even putting together another side-scrolling platformer means you've got to surmount Shovel Knight and Axiom Verge. It's tough making a mark when such an immaculate, bulletproof selection of titles are your main competition.

To that end, thankfully 2017 hasn't had any monumental disasters on the level of No Man's Sky, but with many notable highs, its stumbles were plain to see...
