Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, and this is no different within the world of video games. Over the last three decades, the industry has birthed its share of heroes, many of which have gone on to become iconic and recognisable not just to gamers, but within the greater pop culture landscape.

Sometimes they are the pinnacle of virtue, determination, and decency. Other times they are more morally grey; willing to do terrible things to in order to save that one good thing they can't lose. A hero doesn't have to be all good, either, as long as we understand the purpose of their journey.

25. Dovahkiin (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim)

Bethesda

Dovahkiin, the Dragonborn, is a prophesied hero of Nordic legend, destined to save Nirn from Alduin, the dragon God of Destruction. He or she has the ability to absorb the soul of a slain dragon and obtain its knowledge and power.

This makes the Dovahkiin an immensely powerful individual, instilling in them a responsibility to right the wrongs seen throughout their journey. There are countless people and factions in need of the Dovahkiin's aid, who is almost always willing to help, even at the expense of the more pressing issues.

Depending on the player, the Dovahkiin doesn't always make the most ethical choices, but when the fate of the world is on the line, there is no one better to have on your side. With Alduin banished, the Dovahkiin is free to wander Skyrim and influence its future in the way they best see fit.
