It has LONG been said that video games have a hype problem, and honestly, scanning the 8th generation's releases... that adage only holds more true.

Think of the phrase "disappointing video game" and TONS come to mind.

Cyberpunk 2077, Star Wars: Battlefront 2, No Man's Sky, Fallout 76, Watch Dogs, Mass Effect: Andromeda - it's honestly pretty ridiculous how much hype and excitement we collectively generate for a given game every year, only for the whole thing to implode at launch.

All that said though - and with the rule definitely being to temper expectations - which games received such overblown levels of hype... and then capitalised on it?

Which titles unified their coding and marketing departments, knowing precisely how to advertise what was coming, while reigning things in on the design side to hit their lofty goals?

I'll tell you, putting this list together was hard, because it truly does skew towards the stinkers once we start talking about over-anticipated titles.
