After a rocky-as-hell generation, Microsoft are finally starting to establish some sense of focus, drive and brand identity once again. It's literally taken this entire console cycle, seeing everything from failed motion-controlled TV integration to a lack of exclusives put everyone off.

Now though, following a solid slate of announcements at E3 2018, Microsoft have added to their own library of developers with both Obsidian and InXile Entertainment. The former brought us Fallout: New Vegas, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Pillars of Eternity and the cult-classic Alpha Protocol, where InXile are responsible for The Bard's Tale franchise, Torment: Tides of Numenara and the original Fallout-aping Wasteland.

They've each put out some heartfelt announcement videos on their respective channels, detailing what working with Microsoft means in terms of resources; access to a wider array of coding talent, and even market research to make sure they stay on the right track.

The most interesting takeaway is that connective Fallout tissue. Obsidian's New Vegas is often thought of as the best Fallout of them all, and InXile's Wasteland is essentially the first two Fallout dev's continuation of that franchise in all but name.
