By now you've probably decided if Hidetaka Miyazaki's brutally unforgiving series of games are for you or not, but either way, the Demon's/Dark Souls titles (and now spin-off of sorts, Bloodborne) have garnered a hardcore following that tends to put just as many people off as they do recruiting them for the long-haul. Each subsequent instalment since Demon's Souls in 2009 managed to elicit the same polarising reaction, bolstering the reputation of the series whilst tweaking additions to gameplay, item-balancing and stat-progression to truly become the gamer's game. Bloodborne was the most successful at breaking through to mainstream back in March, 2015, but difficulty-wise it didn't let up for a second, having one of the most punishing opening sections of all time before you'd even tackle the first boss. Now, with Dark Souls III set to release next year, it'll aim to combine the signatire sense of adventure and isolation from those earlier games with the speedier combat of Bloodborne, meaning this third take could be the definitive execution of Miyazaki's initial formula. Tentatively penned in as March 24th, 2016, DS III should do for next year what Bloodborne did for 2015; show off the genius inherent to the games' design, whilst reminding people the most rewarding experiences in all of gaming come directly through surviving the most initially insurmountable odds.
