Have you been playing DOOM? Because I've been playing DOOM. A lot.

Id Software's reboot of the now 23 year-old franchise has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response so far. Both critics and fans can't seem to get enough of the first console shooter to successfully revert everything back to the genre's PC roots, and by amping up the gore-factor and ensuring it continually runs at a steady 60fps, it's an eyeball-searing display of technical prowess than both the PS4 and Xbox One desperately need.

Indeed, despite at face value appearing to just be one giant trigger-pull and a handful of explosions, there's a surprising amount of tactical depth to proceedings, one that once it's clicked and you've unlearned everything the likes of Call of Duty and Halo have taught you, truly takes on a life of its own.

So, in the spirit of getting the most out of what's almost definitely going to be the shooter of the year (Overwatch, over to you), check out these helpful insights, secrets and tips for iD's most successful game in years.

10. Switch Weapons Without The Weapon Wheel

Now this might be a glitch, but for me I've found you can actually maintain the pace of a gunfight whilst switching weapons, without it going into the slow-motion menu.

To do so, simply hold R1/RB as normal and hit the direction that would point towards your given firearm on the weapon wheel, then depress both at the same time. Literally just 'button, direction, let go', fairly fast.

The wheel won't pop but you'll still switch weapons - it's perfect for any more intense encounters where you're juggling jumping trajectories with the need to switch tactics on the fly.

I'll say again, you need to be pretty fast with this, but it does work. Keep practicing and you'll get it!
