E3 2012: Sony Wants PS4 To Be The Best Not The First

We're all eagerly looking to the future in anticipation of the next generation of consoles. The current console cycle has been the longest to date. With the launch of the Xbox 360 back in 2005, these machines have been with us close to seven years. With the Wii U being pushed out the door, Sony and Microsoft are busy developing their next pieces of hardware. Indicated by what many has seen as a some what lackluster and subdued E3, it's clear that this generation is coming to an end and things are beginning to wrap up. Speaking with GameTrailers Jack Tretton outlined the philosophy of the Playstation team as they move into the future.

We've never been first. We've never been cheapest. It's about being the best. If you can build a better machine, and it's going to come out a little bit later, that's better than rushing something to market that's going to run out of gas for the long term. Ideally, in a perfect world, you want the best machine that ships first, that's cheapest. But the number one goal is to be the best machine, and that's what we're always focused on.

This is perhaps an acknowledgement of how the PS3 released after the Xbox 360 with an extremely high price point. Wanting to build the est machine is all well and good, but if Sony haven't taken the lessons learnt with the launch of the PS3 to heart they could be in danger of alienating their core demographics. Price isn't always the best indication of quality. The next generationPlaystation, known to be called the Playstation Orbis, is currently under development and we should start getting more details on it some time next year. E3 2013 perhaps?
