Instead it'll take place on huge maps filled with 100 player-strong, last man standing deathmatches. It'll be stories of two individuals landing on the same roof, forced to hack each other to pieces so they could grab a nearby firearm - just in time to hunker down and fortify against another wave of incoming enemies baying for blood. It's the story of gaming's newest runaway success - something that originated on PC with PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, and has recently arrived on consoles in the form of the free Fortnite standalone expansion, Fortnite Battle Royale.

The rules are somewhat simple: 100 players deploy from an overhead vehicle. They can land anywhere. At key intervals the play-space will shrink, forcing everybody together at a steady clip. Hide, loot, listen and survive. Last person standing wins.

Understandably this blend of third-person shooting, survival game tactics and random loot is immediately enjoyable, and has resulted in over a million concurrent players on both PUBG (PlayerUnknown's abbreviation) and Fortnite's launch evening.

Hopefully the genre will only get bigger, but if you're playing Battle Royale and want to make a play for the top spot, take the following points into account.
