Sony confirmed as much at E3 when it announced a new instalment in the God of War series, with protagonist Kratos in line to return and paint the PlayStation 4 with the blood of his enemies once again.

The game's debut trailer spilled plenty of juicy details, not least the fact that the irate cueball will sport a badass beard in his next outing. Oh, and he also has a son, and has taken up residence in the world of Norse mythology.

With the murderous demigod set to take on the unlikely role of mentor and protector to wage war on a new pantheon of creatures, monsters, and deities, here are 10 things we know about the hotly-anticipated God of War sequel.

10. The Timeline Predates The Viking Era

With all of the mythical beasts and deities from Greek scripture well and truly slaughtered during the earlier games, developer Sony Santa Monica has hit the soft reboot switch and shifted the action to the world of Norse mythology.

Kratos will take on the role of stranger in a strange land and battle a menagerie of Skyrim-esque creatures, but we’re unlikely to see him cross paths with any Vikings.

Creative director Corey Barlog has confirmed God of War’s timeline predates the Viking era, taking place in an age when their gods walked the earth - although with Kratos around, they probably won’t be walking it for much longer.

The last time we saw Kratos in the chronology, he appeared to mortally wound himself to deny Athena the chance to reclaim her power. After shrugging off that little scratch, it appears the Spartan left Greece behind and journeyed to Norway.

Barlog revealed that the Norse setting was chosen because the ideology coexisted with the ancient Greek belief system, separated only by geography.
