Before GTA V: 10 Greatest Deaths In GTA History

By Joseph Dempsey /

When you think "Grand Theft Auto", you think its car-jacking namesake, fights with the law, deadly shootouts, murder, theft and other such felonious activities. The long-running sandbox series never has been a game for the faint of heart. Nearly all of the series' primary protagonists (or is that antagonists?) have been characterised as unhinged psychopaths and with three central characters to play as in upcoming GTA V, you can expect the death and destruction to go up a notch. And, as we wait for next Tuesday's fervently anticipated release date, here, we take a look at the 10 Greatest Deaths from the series so far to whet our appetite.

10. Maria - GTA III

There aren't too many deaths in the Grand Theft Auto cannon that polarize opinion as much as Maria's apparent demise. Is she dead, or isn't she? At the end of GTA III, having killed Catalina and a truck load of Colombians, protagonist Claude is seen walking off into the sunset with Maria by his side, rabbiting into his earhole about God knows what. The next thing we hear, as the screen fades to black and the credits role, is a single, lone gun shot. One of the more stylish of deaths in the series in that it was only implied, Maria's almost certain doom has to make our top 10.
