The Legend Of Zelda: 10 Open-World Features It Needs To Have

A massive explorable Hyrule with thousands of locations Skyrim-style? Shut up and take our rupees!

NintendoThe Legend of Zelda series is not immensely popular and well-loved without reason: over the years, it has embodied what many of us love about Nintendo and about gaming in general, with characters, stories, and settings that warm the heart and challenge the mind. This year at E3, 28 years after its inception the series still inspired the conversation that many of its peers cannot manage, with the gaming world abuzz for weeks since Eiji Aonuma announced that Zelda Wii U would have an open-world concept. For many, it€™s the stuff that dreams are made of; a Zelda game, unconstrained by the items you have and your progression in the game, focussing on exploring the hauntingly beautiful world of Hyrule with nothing to stop you. It€™s got most Zelda fans €“ and others €“ chomping at the bit for a taste of what that could be like. The possibilities for open-world features for Zelda Wii U are endless, each more appealing than the last. The only certainty is, no matter in which direction they go for the 2015 scheduled release, it will change the face of everyone's favourite Nintendo franchise for good.

10. A Customisable Link

NintendoLink is one of the most important factors of Zelda games, our foothold into the vast world of Hyrule. As such, it might be interesting to upgrade the character for the new open-world style of playing. In past Zelda titles, we€™ve had a very straightforward way of doing things: you start with a dinky sword and shield, then you get progressively better swords and shields as you progress through the game in the expected order. The open-world concept however, opens the possibility for change in this regard; players could be able to customise what Link wears, shields with, and fights with. Other than just the alternate blue and red tunics, we could have different, upgradeable gear with certain perks, abilities, and armour capabilities. This could be fun in offering choice in terms of main weaponry as well, with some sword or bows having certain capabilities; some items could maximise the spin attack, with others improving precision striking, as an example. With open-world RPG-style games, the playable character is often customisable in terms of hair, face, gender, and more. However, Link is more than just an avatar at this point, he is a character - and a beloved one - so this one should be handled with care to merge the old and the new in a way that doesn€™t cause mass outrage and invalidate decades of meticulous green-tunic-clad, blond-wigged cosplays (oh, the humanity!).
