Two years after it was announced, Square Enix's Avengers Project has finally been properly unveiled to the public, and the response has been... mixed. Unlike the home-run that was Insomniac's Spider-Man, with The Avengers, everything from the designs of the characters (which do admittedly look quite wonky) to the story has been constantly picked apart.

While your mileage may vary on how much of this criticism you think is deserved, it hasn't helped that the official messaging coming out of Square has been puzzling. From flip-flopping on whether or not the title is a live-service game to barely explaining how combat is actually going to work, there's been a lot of information about the title that's had to be pieced together from post-release interviews and recorded off-screen gameplay footage.

Thankfully, a proper understanding of how the game is shaping up, and what it actually is, has rolled out in the week since its first unveiling. Even better, from a pure story and mechanical perspective, it sounds like Marvel's Avengers could be a worthy entry into the company's so called 'gamerverse', and prove Spider-Man wasn't just a one-off.
