Marvel's Avengers Is REALLY Missing Something

Square Enix finally peeled back the curtain on Marvel's Avengers during an hour-long 'War Table' livestream this week, giving fans an extensive look at the hotly-anticipated superhero team up.

There was a lot to unpack, from a new story trailer detailing how Kamala Khan is the one to bring the team back together after the events of A-Day, to new gameplay footage from both the single-player and multiplayer modes.

It all looked solid, and seeing Thor flying around before ground-pounding the life out of robots aped the kind of superhero spectacle of the comics, but there was something about the stream that fell a bit flat.

The mission the team decided to show off - with Thor fighting waves of enemies on a Helicarrier - didn't offer any moment that proved why this superhero title is a cut above the rest. Even though the trailer was only 8 minutes long, repetition set in, as the God of Thunder destroyed one identical robotic sub boss after another.

Square Enix has a tough job selling this game as both a games-as-service platform for future content as well as a proper singe-player, narrative-driven experience that can meet the bar of Insomniac's Spider-Man.

There's still a long way to go until the September launch date (and the co-op tease did look more promising) but so far, I'm not convinced.
