Details are very thin on the ground when it comes to the Metal Gear Solid movie, though when Hideo Kojima's 1998 masterwork is at stake, there's still a ton to talk about.

Thankfully, the project is in very good hands, as Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts has not only been a devout Metal Gear fanatic growing up, but he's also spent the last three years hanging out and getting to know Hideo Kojima himself. As such, very recently he sat down with Gamespot to discuss how Sony's original vision for the adaptation was going off course, potentially into far more generic action movie' fare, succeeding in convincing the higher-ups to rework the script and make it feel "more Kojima".

What that means exactly, we'll have to wait and see, though we do know that Vogt-Roberts' MGS movie is a standalone affair. He discusses "trying to fuse a couple of different storylines [together] with a device I can’t really talk about right now, but that I’m really excited about”, which to me, sounds like some sort of fourth wall-breaking, "involve the audience"-type shenanigans.

So far, so Kojima.

With this somewhat more original setup, fans need not worry about the woes of a straight adaptation and are instead free to spot easter eggs, callbacks and plotlines from across the entire canon. All that's needed is to nail the characters at the heart of whatever story we do get, and that means pulling from any and all games to cast the right people from the get-go.
