Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance DLC Announces A New Playable Character

Raiden is getting to star in his own game again but once again, someone else will also be playable for a portion......is this a sign?

The infamous production of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (previously Metal Gear Solid: Rising) has seen the game evolve drastically from the promos we got in 2010. Kojima Productions passed the baton to Bayonetta devs Platinum and it seems to have been a smart move. While the tone and story of the game have done a 720 back flip and the name has become idiotic, it is a somewhat re-assuring turn of events considering Platinum's previous work. Yes, if there was a studio who can make a kick ass 3rd person action game it is Platinum. The new MGR:R looks much more like Platinum's Vanquish than any previous MGS game but this is a new direction for the series. Stealth is pretty much out but stealth isn't what these Cyborg Ninjas are about, insane martial arts is. Insane martial arts we are getting by the JCB load. That isn't the only thing we will be getting as producer Yuji Korekado has just announced a new playable character will be available in post release DLC. Yuji said in a recent interview: "Right now we don't have any plans for competitive online play or anything like that. However, we do have plans for some downloadable content after the release of the game that will allow you to play as a different character or experience different types of missions." This is an interesting development. No further information has been released to indicate who this character will be. Traditionally there have been very few good characters in the Metal Gear games, as most characters are either lively villains or double crossing allies. We could be treated to an entirely new character though it would be a risky move. Alternatively we could get to play as a villain which could be very fun indeed. There is a part of me that would like to play as Snake but considering this new story is set 9 years after MGS4 and Snake has been ageing rapidly I don't see it happening. Of course this also begs the question as to why? For a criminally small portion of MGS2 you could play as Solid Snake which only went to highlight how sub-par Raiden was by comparison. Could this be another case of bringing in a more popular character to smooth over the Raiden moaning-fest? I sincerely hope not as his role in MGS4 was distinctly bad ass. With no confirmed release date set it seems unlikely that this will hit us in 2012 but everything seems to be heading in the right direction now for a 2013 release. In the mean time check out the E3 trailer bellow.
