Back when I was a kid the battle was between Medal of Honour and Call of Duty, now it's 2011 the players have changed and seemingly tactics have gotten dirty. Ever since E3, though some argue this was going on before that, with the two games sporting trailers with similar elements the two games, for want of a better phrase, have entered all out war. The most recent blow being delt, apparently, by the guys at Battlefield 3 with the domain www.modernwarfare3.com redirecting to a Battlefield page. Would EA stoop to such levels? Some would say yes. For example the guys at Games Radar* seem all too eager to point the finger directly at DICE while quoting the executive producer of Battlefield 3, Patrick Bach, as found at CVG.
Everyone wants there to be a fight between us - and I understand that - but the problem is if you say it's a 'fight,' you're assuming you're competing at the same sport. We have so many things in our game that aren't a part of Modern Warfare, so it really comes down to personal preference. You choose based on the depth you want, the maturity level, your own personal taste... it's all about how you get your fix. We're building the game we want to play, and there are a lot of Battlefield fans who agree with us.
*It should be noted that the article at Games Radar has since been amended to take all the facts into consideration. Taking all this into consideration, it begs the question that if DICE are so focuced on their own game to worry about Modern Warface 3, which admittedly I am inclined to believe, then why the apparent underhanded tactics such as URL forwarding? IGN may hold the answer via Net Media Now. It appears that rather than EA or DICE being behind the redirection it is instead a less than eloquent hater of MW2. Via a cache of the page you can see for yourself with a little message giving some insight into the author.
Modern Warfare is crap. On November 8, 2011, the most over-hyped first-person action series of all-time returns with the copy and paste sequel to the lackluster Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Check out the E3 2011 gameplay demo featuring the Black Tuesday level for a look at the epic fail of the campaign. Pre-Order Call of Duty MW3 Today for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC to secure exclusive bonuses only available online for Modern Warfare 3 fanboys who don't know that Battlefield 3 is the better game.
So, angry fanboy, elaborate hoax, or underhanded tactics? What you believe is entirely up to you, but that fact of of the matter is this. Both Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 look like they are going to be amazing games, but just like people have always prefered one thing over another, people are going to fight this out amongst themselves anyway. Time will tell which game comes out top, but with both series having diehard fans this may be a rivalry that is never concluded.
