It seems even Square Enix didn't see the monumental success of Octopath Traveller coming. Topping the Nintendo Switch best-selling chart in all three major areas (U.S., U.K. AND Japan), Amazon have taken a few months' worth of backdated orders on physical copies, just to keep on top of demand.
Where it's very easy to take one look at gameplay and think this is "just another JRPG", the state of the industry has seen the genre fall almost completely by the wayside.
Brilliantly, Octopath shakes up the genre's core foundations quite considerably. Gone is the tired "save the world"/"you're an amnesiac, go discover your destiny" plot setup, and instead we have eight characters embarking on personal journeys, crossing over to help one another out where necessary.
Combat is snappy and every class role is essential, presenting stories that flesh out the world overall. We've got inside looks at the land's religious bent, how certain military factions fell, or what it means to be a lecturer or medic in a realm of blades and magic.
