The OnLive Cloud video gaming service will be coming to the UK; OnLive allows players to stream the game through their internet connection as opposite to using a console or a PC. The game is essentially held in a cloud based server and the video is steamed across the internet; however there are limitations on the games resolution due to the fact it is being streamed. OnLive's chief executive Steve Perlman talked about some of the limitations that needed to be over come:
"The first thing we had to do was come up with a new form of video compression, We had to deal with the internet not working, the time delays that occur with different communication methods ."
OnLive was released about a year a go in the US and I don't honestly know anyone who has this service or has used it. Some people believe it is the wave of the future for gaming:
"At present the threat is small, but it will grow. In fact the only drawback I can see is in terms of visual compression, which has been sacrificed to remove lag, From what I can see, the system works and it's not just retailers and console manufacturers who are going to be threatened. It's hardware firms like nVidia and ATI and every gaming platform,"
However, I don't like the idea of paying a monthly fee to play my video games, in addition to the fact I still live in the United States where the use of Wi-Fi is still limited and can be problematic at times. Do you want to see video games move to OnLive like setup where your games are streamed through the internet and the console is a thing of the past, or would you rather maintain status quo?
