Overwatch 2 And Diablo 4 Confirmed As Blizzard Cancel Next StarCraft

Overwatch 2 is coming, but it's not what you think...

In an extensive report published by Jason Schreier over at Kotaku, it's been revealed that Blizzard is doubling down its efforts to make sure Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV hit shelves sooner rather than later. Though both sequels have been rumoured for a while now, Schreier also revealed that the publisher was also working on a StarCraft spin-off, set to be a first-person shooter.

However, despite the game (which was described by sources as being "Battlefield in the StarCraft universe") being two years deep into development and shaping up nicely, the top brass decided that the manpower would be better spent contributing to other projects. That's a shame, as while the game no doubt wouldn't have been for everyone, it would have been interesting to see the publisher release something surprising, rather than new entries in familiar franchises.

With that said, it's good to get confirmation that Blizzard is working on something, never mind two highly-anticipated sequels. Though Diablo IV hasn't received much of an update in the report, the first details on the next Overwatch were revealed. Apparently, the game is going to have a huge PVE focus, rather than the PVP the original game is known for. Inside sources referred to it being similar to Left 4 Dead, which sounds awesome, but only if the regular multiplayer suite returns as well.

Blizzard have had something of a tumultuous year, and doubling down on their most respected franchises could either be a sign of strength, or a desperate bid to win fans back over. Whatever happens, expect to find out more at Blizzcon
