With only a few months left until the PS5 and Xbox Series X arrive in our lives, the competition is heating up mightily fast.

The beginning of 2020 saw a flailing Sony deliver a spectacularly boring tech showcase - something very much left over from the Game Developers Conference, that had been wrongly hyped across social media.

With the PS5 reveal though, everything changed. Suddenly all eyes were on Microsoft, only for them to stumble twice - firstly with a lacklustre third-party showcase, and again with first-party, as Halo Infinite has been meme'd to death over "last-gen" graphics.

Most recently, Square Enix's Avengers game will see none-other than Spider-Man appear exclusively in the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game - a major blow to the optics of those systems, considering 2018's Spidey is the best selling PS4 game so far.

Going forward, both systems are diverging more than ever before. Sony are doubling down on first-party exclusives, timed access to PS4-only content and banking that you'll keep paying to play the latest titles. Microsoft are all-in on subscription models and backwards compatibility; a "Netflix for games", bolstered by xCloud streaming so you can play on the go.

Both can absolutely coexist, but the next decade is going to be fascinating to watch play out.
