The Red Dead Redemption series is one of gaming’s all-time greats. In 2010 Red Dead Redemption (a spiritual follow up to Red Dead Revolver) redefined story-based, open-world games as we knew them. Its genre-defining mix of GTA style gameplay set in a spaghetti western world became an instant classic.

Eight years later, Rockstar surprised the gaming world once again with Red Dead Redemption 2. It enhanced the features of RDR in almost every way, while also adding countless more features, improved graphics and much more.

With this series being such a heavyweight in the gaming world, it's only a matter of time before the next Red Dead game gets announced. Fans are also likely to have questions regarding any potential sequel. Will RDR3 see the return of John Marston or Arthur Morgan? Will it be set before or after the events seen in the previous games? What will the map look like? And so on.

There's no doubt Rockstar possess a fantastic track record, but they have colossal cowboy boots to fill if they are to add a third entry to their iconic Red Dead Redemption series.

10. Honor

Red Dead Redemption saw the introduction of an interesting gameplay mechanic in the Honor System. If the protagonist committed acts of kindness their Honor level would increase - if they acted dishonourably it would go down. In RDR this only really resulted in how NPC’s would interact with Marston, but if the Honor was low enough lawmen would eventually hunt the player down to claim the bounty on their head.

Like most things, this system was greatly improved upon in Red Dead Redemption 2. Depending on the player’s Honor level, whole sections of gameplay would be different, alternate interactions would happen and one of four separate endings would occur.

To follow in the footsteps of its predecessors, it would be intriguing to see how this gameplay mechanic could again be expanded upon in a possible RDR3. Where in both of the earlier entries, the player’s Honor level influenced the way NPC’s interacted with the player, this could be developed into completely diverging character arcs. Based on how honourable a player is could open up certain side missions with particular characters. This could warrant a more strategic approach to interactive gameplay and even provide a reason for multiple playthroughs.

Rockstar has made the player’s actions incredibly important to the overarching narrative of both RDR games. Further development on this vital component of the series is a must for any third game.
