Following Microsoft boss Phil Spencer confirming his plans for a more inclusive future when it comes to Xbox and PC exclusives, Sony has doubled down on its plan to continue making games that only work on the PS5.

Talking to Geoff Keighley on a livestream, Sony marketing man Eric Lempel reiterated that a pillar of the company and the Playstation brand is "innovation", and that the PS5 needs exclusive games to push the industry forward and give players a reason to buy into next gen. He said:

"A big pillar of our company is innovation: it’s a pillar of Sony Corporation and it’s also a pillar of the PlayStation company. We are always trying to push the boundaries of play – we want to excite gamers and deliver new experiences. In many cases, we can’t take everyone with us from previous consoles because you need new hardware and devices.”

One of the first console-exclusive games for the PS5 will be Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, which simply wouldn't work on the PS4 thanks to the way it harnesses the next-gen SSD. While there will of course be a focus on cross-gen games, Sony isn't taking the Microsoft approach of waiting a few years before dropping next-gen only titles.

Which company has the better approach? Let us know in the comments.
