Star Wars Battlefront Sequel Set For Next Year

The force remains strong for EA Dice's action shooter.

After EA's 2015 Battlefront reboot absolutely smashed the company's sales expectations, becoming the quickest selling Star Wars video game of all time in the process, it should come as absolutely no surprise that the publisher today announced plans for a follow-up.

It's safe to assume this would have happened regardless; the teet of the Star Wars cash-cow is one that is unlikely to run dry any time soon, even with Disney cancelling Disney Infinity and its Star Wars expansions.

During a regular EA earnings call, CFO Blake Jorgensen dropped the bombshell that unlike the previous game, the new Battlefront will draw from the 'new movies' for its content. That is to say, The Force Awakens. Reading between the lines then, we can expect a Battlefront every year from now on to coincide with the latest Star Wars flick.

Jorgensen also made the vague assertion that the new game would have 'bigger and better worlds', so that's obviously promising. He further put on record that we'll 'most likely have one Star Wars title a year for the next three to four years'. With a raft of spin-off movies on the cards, don't be surprised to see many more.

A precise release date for the new Battlefront is still far off; EA's fiscal year ends on April 1st, so 'next year' could theoretically be 2016 in Jorgensen's parlance. With last year's Battlefront DLC still active and imminent however, the likelihood is a Q4 2017 release.
