Tron: Legacy Director Joseph Kosinski In Talks For Gran Turismo Video Game Movie

Will it work better than Need For Speed?

By Brendon Connelly /

Joseph Kosinski has, to date, only directed two films: the shiny, bright Tron Legacy and the altogether more grimy Oblivion. The leap in quality from the first to the second was so substantial, however, his third seems like a movie worth waiting for. But what that third movie will be has proven hard to pin down, with projects coming and going and never quite getting rolling. Now, though, he's making a deal to direct Sony's long-gestating movie version of the Gran Turismo video game. Being a driving simulator, Gran Turismo has only the sketchiest of plots, and one that's 98% cars going fast, 2% cars slowing down for corners. For a good while the plan was to make this movie about a video gamer who becomes an ace driver, but that was when Alex Tse was writing and things could be entirely different now Kosinski is coming on board and wanting to develop a new script. Aaron Paul and Imogen Poots found out the hard way that movies based on racing games can hit the skids easily, with last year's Need For Speed underperforming somewhat. One of Kosinski's previous planned projects was a Le Mans movie called Go Like Hell but that one seemed to hinge on Brad Pitt getting in the driver's seat and when he failed to commit, the film shimmered away like a mirage. There's a long way to go with Gran Turismo yet but we'll keep an eye open and pass on any news.
