UPDATE: A source who works closely with the Tom Clancy brand from within Ubisoft has confirmed that this is (sadly) not true.

The original story is as follows:

So take this with a tablespoon of salt for now, but a thread over on NEOGaf is reporting that not only are Ubisoft making a new Splinter Cell, but they've listened to fans and got the legendary Michael Ironside back as Sam Fisher, too.

The poster states they've been personally informed "Ironside is recast as Sam Fisher", which boots out the divisive Eric Johnson who took over for 2013's underrated gem, Splinter Cell: Blacklist. The leak apparently comes from the set of new movie, The Space Between, where Ironside was heard mentioning that he was "working on a new Splinter Cell".

With Gamescom just around the corner (to which I hereby pledge to ask the first Ubisoft rep I see for a comment), perhaps this was one of the company's big reveals for the event all along?

Regardless, with Assassin's Creed now on the back-burner (if not buried six feet under) and Watch Dogs 2 looking promising - but perhaps not the behemoth Ubisoft need it to be - could this be the perfect time for one of the company's flagship franchises to make a return?
