To leave a lasting impression, horror films are often filled with creative kills, jaw-dropping twists, iconic villains, and a legion of jump-scares.

But if a slasher, creature feature, or body horror really wants to stand out, it's important to nail the beginning. If the first scene is inventive, entertaining, or scary as hell, the audience should be invested straight away.

However, this is easier said than done. If the movie starts with characters being killed off before they're properly introduced, it won't be as impactful. If too much time is spent setting up the group's dynamic or the story, the audience may find themselves looking at their watch, wondering when the scares are gonna start.

But as we've established in our previous list, there are some horror flicks that are scary as hell right out of the gate. These prologues didn't just frighten viewers, but left them speechless, unable to comprehend what they saw.

By kicking things off with a brutal death, a thought-provoking mystery, a chilling line, or a truly WTF moment, horror lovers found themselves enraptured long before getting to the meat of the story.

10. Cube Zero

Even though Cube had quite a few grisly deaths, Cube Zero proves to be far gorier within the first few minutes. Similar to the original, this prequel starts with a prisoner called Ryjkin waking up inside a boobytrapped labyrinth.

After making his way into another room, Ryjkin is sprayed by mechanical hoses, drenching his entire body. Although he screams at first, the prisoner quickly realises he's not in any pain, indicating the liquid he was sprayed with is harmless.

Or so it seems. Looking at his hands, Ryjkin notices his skin has taken on an unnaturally bulbous texture. Trying to scratch it off, Ryjkin only manages to peel the skin off his hand.

As Ryjkin's face begins to melt and blood spews from his trousers, it becomes clear the liquid is disintegrating him on a cellular level. In his hysteria, the Ryjkin pulls the skin on his cheek, ripping off his entire face. Before his body is reduced to a bloody heap of slop, Ryjkin lets out one final bloodcurdling scream.

The rest of Cube Zero may be a mess, but this gross-out sequence won't be forgotten any time soon.
