10 Greatest Animated Music Videos Of All Time

Prepare for your breath to be taken...

By Brian Wilson /

There are so many music videos in the world that sometimes it feels like the formula is truly exhausted. After all, there are a bunch of main “types”: the sketch, the footage of the band performing live, the compilation of tour clips. Often it feels like there are very few ways of breaking from this mould and creating something truly unique.

But that's where animation comes in, which isn't bound by what can or can't be reasonably shot. Animation allows for infinite creativity, not just in terms of content but also with style.

It isn't just restricted to traditional drawing, either. As this list shows, there are a ton of various animation styles. Utilizing and combining these makes for some of the most breath-taking music videos ever created.

From pencil-sketch to stop-motion and beyond, here are the ten greatest animated music videos of all time...

10. Red Hot Chili Peppers – Love Rollercoaster

When it comes to lesser known Red Hot Chili Peppers singles, Love Rollercoaster is ironically one of the most well known. This is likely due to the fact that it's not from one of the band's studio albums, but rather features on the Beavis And Butt-Head Do America soundtrack. On top of that, the song is also a cover of an American funk song by the Ohio Players, originally appearing on their 1975 album Honey.

Released in 1996, the Peppers' version is quite different, featuring new lyrics and arrangements. The video itself is a mixture of two different things. Firstly, there are scenes of the band fully animated, playing the song in a traditional band set-up. Alongside this are shots of the group riding the song's titular (and much more literal) roller-coaster, occasionally performing from the cart, heading through tunnels and even featuring Flea roller-skating along the tracks after falling out.

This is spliced together with scenes from the Beavis And Butt-Head Do America film, of which the scenes are random yet humorous, and animated in the classic Beavis And Butt-Head style.
