The NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) rose to prominence during the early 1980's, ushering in an era of heavier riffs, faster tempos and punishing power chords and signalling the end of the 1970's Hard Rock dominance. Then came Thrash Metal. Not only were the NWOBHM bands responsible for the birth of Thrash Metal, inspiring the likes of Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax to play harder and faster but it was those bands and their massive success that also sounded the death knell for the NWOBHM; the pupils out schooling the masters within a few short years. Aside from Maiden, Priest, Motörhead and Saxon, the majority of the NWOBHM bands faded into insignificance as a result and many were forgotten almost entirely. In 2014, many of the classic NWOBHM bands are hitting the comeback trail, recording new music, remastering old albums and touring both the UK, Europe and further afield. More than just simple nostalgia, the love for these bands and their considerable influence is on the rise because many NWOBHM bands are currently at the top of their game. This article will countdown the Ten NWOBHM bands currently active who are enjoying a resurgence in their careers and are releasing some of the finest music of their lives. The NWOBHM is in rude health, long may it reign.
