Who knows what the formula is for a hit song? Is it a catchy melody? A toe-tapping beat? Is it the ability to capture perfectly a moment in time, so that whenever anyone hears the song in the future they're transported? Is it a charismatic performer, with a voice that speaks directly to your soul? Whatever it is, all the songs in this article have it. They're all hugely popular and chances are that at least one of them has a prize spot on your favourite Spotify playlist. And in addition to being well-loved, iconic songs, these tracks all have one thing in common: truly godawful lyrics. Some of these lyrics are one line terrible missteps in otherwise wonderful songs. Some are indicative of top to bottom garbage lyrics that we all somehow overlooked when falling in love with the track. All of them will make you cringe a little and wonder what exactly these songwriters were thinking when they put pen to paper.

See, just because two words have the same sound at the start doesn't mean they're in any way related to one another. You may as well have said "I've got soul but I'm not a pastry chef".
