5 Bands That Could Be The New Dillinger Escape Plan

2017 marks the end of The Dillinger Escape Plan. Who will carry on their legacy?

By Steven Hooke /

At the start of 2017, we had one of the most exciting and chaotic bands in rock and metal in The Dillinger Escape Plan. By the time 2017 comes to a close, they'll will be gone. Greg Puciato and co. will all go their separate ways, and while nearly all members have new musical outlets (Killer Be Killed, Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, John Frum, etc.), there is a gaping hole left in the mathcore scene.

TDEP are one of the few bands to bring what is usually a very abrasive genre to mainstream attention, whether that is through experimentation with more palatable electronica or prog metal elements, attracting Faith No More frontman Mike Patton for the Irony Is a Dead Scene EP, or just through being really bloody good.

Whatever the reason, after 20 years of setting the standard, across six full-length albums and 15 full time members, it is time to pass on the torch.

But to whom you may ask? Whenever people say “mathcore”, the poster boys were/are The Dillinger Escape Plan and Converge. To rub shoulders with a band like Converge requires some sizeable, mathematically-gifted trouser plums, and to fill Dillinger’s void will require something equally ridiculous/impressive.

5. Palm Reader

Straight out of Nottingham, Palm Reader exploded onto the scene in 2011, tearing apart the underground hardcore scene before releasing their 2012 self-titled EP to high acclaim from noted music critics such as Metal Hammer, Rock Sound and Kerrang!.

Setting the bar high for themselves, they still managed to smash all expectations with their debut album Bad Weather in 2013, earning them support slots with Touché Amoré, Pianos Become the Teeth, and Gallows.

Eventually catching the attention of and getting signed by In at the Deep End Records, Palm Reader now find themselves in decent pedigree as IATDE have been the starting block for some of hardcore's biggest names, such as Gallows, Architects and Send More Paramedics.

Not one to be outdone, the band followed up their second album with ‘'5 Shows / 1 Day / 0 F*cks’ which (if you hadn't guessed) saw them play five London venues in around twelve hours.

The boys are currently preparing for the release of their third album with lead single 'Always Darkest'. In the meantime, they are bringing their brand of chaotic hardcore to the support slot for fellow hardcore powerhouse Employed to Serve and then leading the march for a headline tour with an appearance at 2000 Trees Festival in the middle.
