Take contemporary jazzy folk-country singer-songwriting and inject a bit of the wry, often-risque humor of Lou Reed, and what do you get? (Besides a confusing analogy, of course) Carsie Blanton Blanton is a native of Luray, Virginia, developed her style in Eugene, Oregon and Philadelphia, and currently resides in New Orleans. Her songs range from folk to lighthearted pop to jazzy vamps. And the lyrics deal with both bohemian lifestyles and everyday occurrences. Carsie has gotten a lot of attention in recent years. Shes opened shows for Shawn Colvin and Paul Simon. Several people have pointed to her as one of the best singer-songwriters out there. She has a dedicated fan base throughout the United States. And she had a bit of a youtube hit with the video for her song Baby Can Dance. Blanton has released three full-length albums, the most recent being the well-received Idiot Heart in 2012. And she put out an EP, Rude Remarks and Dirty Jokes, last week. In the run-up to the EP release, I interviewed Carsie over email about her songwriting, musical philosophy, and the direction her music is taking. Ive included my questions, and her answers, on the next page so fans, potential fans, and those interested in contemporary singer-songwriters can learn more about Carsie Blanton. (Full disclosure: I know Carsie Blanton, as my brother occasionally tours with her as her drummer)
