Nick Cave: 10 Dark Masterpieces

By Elliot Davies /

Nick Cave has a new album out! After a few energetic years, Push The Sky Away feels like a return to his gentler, mellower days. However, I fully anticipate that, after a few listens, we'll start to pick out a dark underbelly. Because it's Nick Cave. If you turn over even his nicest of songs you'll find a heaving mass of insects. But that's not a bad thing. We all need an outlet for the less pleasant parts of our mind. To that end, and to celebrate the release of Push The Sky Away, I've compiled a list of 10 Dark Masterpieces from the mind of Nick Cave. At its best, his music can make you feel gleefully evil like having binged on horror films and red wine that looks a little bit too much like blood. But if heard at the right volume, in the right frame of mind and at the right time of day, they can also inspire a very primal fear €“ for your mortality, for your salvation and, above all, for all the bad, bad people in the world who'll think nothing of cutting you open, just to see how your innards fit together. Of course, he writes genuinely lovely songs, too. But that's a list for another day. For the sake of consistency, I'm sticking to songs from his albums with The Bad Seeds. Though that's not to write-off his work as The Birthday Party and as Grinderman. Indeed, some songs by both bands makes the work of The Bad Seeds sound almost polite by comparison. But with The Bad Seeds, he's released an unbroken run of 15 brilliant albums, and it's about time this tremendous, arguably unprecedented feat was recognised.
