Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman has passed away, aged 49. Hanneman who played rhythm and lead guitar on classic Slayer tracks such as Reign in Blood, Seasons in the Abyss and Angel of Death, died of liver failure at a hospital near his home in California today after a long battle with illness. Hanneman was known as the co founder of the thrash metal band and is credited for writing the band's most iconic track ever 'Reign in Blood'. Although the band haven't recorded any new material in almost 5 years Slayer have remained at the forefront of many fans minds especially at the beginning of April when it was announced Hanneman was struggling with illness. The band were quick to reassure fans that the iconic guitarist was still a member of the band despite his prolonged time away from the spotlight. It is now clear exactly why Hanneman had been absent from the lineup. In 2011 Hanneman had been stricken with acute necrotising fasciitis which he is believed to have contracted from a spider bite although band mate Kerry King has disputed this. A spokesman for the band made the announcement regarding his death and issues the following statement:
"Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. He was 49. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed."
