9 Classic Works Of Fiction In Which The Narrator Was Barking Mad

By Clare Simpson /

The insane narrator is an absorbing facet of literary fiction. They can be outright murderous, mentally ill or completely do lally - or all three at the same time. Insane narrators are often referred to in the literary world as 'Unreliable Narrators' as their narrative is usually imbued with their skewed psyches and we cannot rely upon them to give an objective account of facts in the piece of fiction. There is something exciting about insane narrators and the world view they present to us. We can vicariously experience madness through the chief protagonist's eyes. This leads to lots of different interpretations of the book and good fun in deciphering the meaning, I have chosen nine works of fiction which include the short story and a poem. If you can name anymore insane narrators, please comment below.
