Disney To Remove Bride Auction Scene From Pirates Of The Caribbean Ride
Sexism keelhauled by the House of Mouse.
Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean ride will axe its most infamous scene when the swashbuckling attraction undergoes modifications over the next year.
The bride auction, which is loved by some and branded heinously sexist by others, is being removed from Disneyland, Walt Disney World and Disneyland Paris.
The auction scene originally featured a female character known as the Redhead being offered to lusty pirates under the hammer, but she will no longer be for sale after the changes have been introduced.
Disney's creative team has reimagined the scene with the Redhead depicted as a pirate who is helping the auctioneer gather valuables from the townspeople.
Kathy Mangum, senior vice president of Walt Disney Imagineering, addressed the change in a blog post...
“Our team thought long and hard about how to best update this scene. Given the redhead has long been a fan favorite, we wanted to keep her as a pivotal part of the story, so we made her a plundering pirate! We think this keeps to the original vision of the attraction as envisioned by Marc Davis, X Atencio and the other Disney legends who first brought this classic to life.”
Disneyland Paris will be the first part to introduce the change next month, with the US locations due to update their Pirates of the Caribbean rides in 2018.
