The light heavyweight champion is injured.

Terrible news for the UFC Tuesday as their light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was forced to withdraw from a major fight at UFC 178. Jones suffered a leg injury during training and was unable to continue training camp. Jones was set to take on heated rival Daniel Cormier on the September pay-per-view which had been stacked full of contenders and big names. Jones and Cormier had went back and forth during several media obligations and even had an all out brawl when the two went face-to-face. The severity of the injury is unknown at this point. It appears if the two will instead square off on January 3 for UFC's big New Year's card. Jones was originally slated to have a highly anticipated rematch with Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 178 but Gustafsson was forced to undergo knee surgery. Daniel Cormier, who delayed a knee surgery of his own stepped in to take the challenge. Its unclear as to what plans the UFC has in store for Gustafsson, but he wasn't expected to be sidelined for an extended period of time. If he waited for a title shot against Jones as opposed to competing in the interim it would put him at well over a year in between fights. Since the beginning of 2012, the Sweden native has only four fights.
