Ajaxs defender Jan Vertonghen has revealed that he is close to signing for Tottenham Hotspur. The 25-year-old Belgian international has been rumoured to be joining the Barclays Premier League, with Spurs and close rivals Arsenal leading the race. Tottenham managed to finish fourth place in the Premier League last season, finishing just one point behind Arsenal and one point behind Champions League football. Even though Tottenham will only be playing in the UEFA Europa League in the upcoming season, Jan Vertonghen has made it clear he prefers them to third place Arsenal. Vertonghen is currently preparing for an international friendly against England and during an interview with the media, Vetonghen said:
'I am a big fan of the Premier League. It is almost the only competition I watch on TV and for me it is the best competition in the world. I would like to play in the Premier League. I am not in contact every day but I think it could be very close now, maybe a couple of weeks or maybe days.'
After being asked about his preferences he said: 'I probably know which team I will be going to, yes. I know where I want to go and I think it is clear to everybody.' Journalists asked him whether that club is Tottenham, he nodded and said:
