It hasn€™t even been a week since The Walking Dead season 3 ended, and already the die-hard fan in me is going through withdrawal. October and its promise of season 4 is so far away, and one can only rewatch episodes so many times. As a fan of the comic book before the show even existed, I was excited beyond belief when it was first announced that Robert Kirkman€™s bleak and harrowing story of survival was finally coming to life on the small screen. However, I was also apprehensive about the whole thing. In an era of merciless cancellations of top quality TV shows, I predicted that The Walking Dead wouldn€™t make it past its planned six-episode first season. Three seasons later, The Walking Dead has climbed to the top of the cable drama hierarchy, becoming a household name and a ratings juggernaut. What makes it standout is its classification as a character study on a trope filled subgenre that has been around since the '60s. People come for the zombie action, but stay for the human drama. Underneath all the realistic gore effects and legions of the undead are what the show is really about: the human characters. Their desperate struggle for survival and deep characterizations is what fuels the internal engine of the show, which could have just easily been a zombie kill-a-thon every single episode. The show takes an unflinching look on how the fall of civilization can affect people from all walks of life and it doesn€™t hold back on showing the ugly side of human regression into more primal instincts, as seen in season 3. Though it has gone through some turbulent times in the case of show runners being replaced and inconsistent characterizations and content, The Walking Dead has proven that the zombie genre is not just mindless one dimensional entertainment, and horrifying scenarios can also produce some of the most compelling human drama. So, as we wait for what€™s in store for season 4, let€™s take a look back at the 10 greatest episodes of The Walking Dead. These episodes are the ones that expertly balanced human drama and horror action, the ones that shocked us and left us wanting more, the ones that had us cheering one moment and tearing up the next, and the ones that showed us just how good The Walking Dead can be when it is at its best.
