Mr. Hillenburg, thank you for all the laughs.

On November 27, 2018, the world lost yet another legend when SpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg passed away. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2017, and died from the disease over a year later at age 57.

Hillenburg started his career as a marine biologist, and later took an interest in animation, ultimately bringing his two passions together when he created the beloved Nickelodeon series.

In his honor, let's look at the 10 absolute best episodes of the beloved show he created. From travelling chocolate bar salesman to perilous pizza deliveries, these are the best adventures that only SpongeBob could come up with.

10. Shanghaied (Season 2, Episode 13a)

After a mysterious large anchor lands in SpongeBob's house, he, Patrick, and Squidward climb up the anchor to investigate, only to find it comes from the ship of the Flying Dutchman. The Dutchman then shanghais SpongeBob and Patrick into his crew (Squidward, meanwhile, is sent down some terrifying dimension). But, as this is SpongeBob and Patrick we're talking about, they don't exactly make competent crew members, nor are they good at scaring people...at all.

What results is a frequently hilarious episode that takes some surprising twists and turns, and it even ends on a rather dark note for a usually lighthearted show. Seriously, did the Dutchman eat SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward? Probably not, since we've gotten a lot more episodes, but this is a show that plays loosely with continuity.

Best Moment: "But the door is locked, and the only way out is through the...perfume department!"
