Just like Arnie in The Terminator, they will be back.

Having to wait for what feels like several ice ages between seasons is part and parcel of a TV junky's life. Game of Thrones fans have it particularly rough these days, considering their next scheduled trip to Westeros is set for 2019.

Any series worth its salt makes the gap between runs almost unbearable by hitting viewers with a massive cliffhanger. Remember when Breaking Bad's mid-season finale brought the curtain down with Hank Schrader discovering Walter White's dark secret? The concluding episodes couldn't arrive soon enough.

Some of the best ongoing shows have attempted to leave the audience with a similar sense of burning anticipation for what comes next, whether signing off for a mid-series break or wrapping up the latest season entirely, but the good news is that many of them are returning in 2018 and have set their comeback dates in stone.

Cliffhangers will be resolved, unanswered questions will hopefully be addressed and character arcs should pick up right where they left off when these gems return to the small screen during the next 12 months.

10. The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead's hotly-anticipated eighth season reached its midway point on 10 December last year and more episodes are already on the horizon, with a return date of 25 February penned into AMC's broadcasting schedule.

Although the latest series of the zombie drama promised much, adapting the much-loved All-Out War arc from the comic books, many fans feel it has failed to live up to their lofty expectations, citing pacing issues and the show's failure to use its best characters to their full potential among their chief concerns.

While many of these complaints are legitimate, Walking Dead has a strong track record when it comes to turning things around, and with an epic conflict due to reach its fiery conclusion in Season 8B, the lull will (hopefully) be temporary.

As well as bringing Rick and his allies' war against Negan and the Saviors to a close, the second half of Season 8 has the small matter of Carl Grimes's fate to address. When the Alexandria leader's son was last seen, he'd suffered what appeared to be a fatal zombie bite, casting his long-term future on the show into serious doubt.

Fan are already bracing themselves for a harrowing return episode, and no doubt hoping that Carl's death will spur Rick and his friends into action as the catalyst that brings the war to the incendiary conclusion it needs.
