It used to be that TV was what you'd do to relax. Go home at the end of a long day, stick something on the box, and chill out.

Now, though, in the era of Peak TV - with around 500(!) shows expected to air in 2018 - it can be exhausting; even overwhelming. There's so much TV to watch that you need to plan a schedule or devote entire weekends to 13-hour binge-watching sessions just to try and keep up (all of which is to say that I haven't watched The Americans Season 6 yet, basically).

While we're not quite still in the 'Golden Age' that brought us game-changing shows like The Sopranos, The Wire, Lost, and Breaking Bad, and there aren't any true watercooler TV shows this year, a lot of television remains excellent.

It's been mostly a good rather than *great* year so far, with a few returning heavy hitters and promising new shows disappointing, and a few big players missing (Game of Thrones is taking the year out, Better Call Saul won't arrive until next month) but we have still been treated to hilarious sitcoms, powerful dramas, and shows that completely blur the lines between the two, leaving an indelible impression on the viewer even as they quickly have to move on to the next new thing.
