Surprise, b*itch! American Horror Story is back with a vengeance.

The FX anthology series returned for its eighth season on Wednesday and, as always, viewers were introduced to a brand new storyline, a new setting, and a selection of chilling new characters. However, Apocalypse's most alluring feature is the fact that it also happens to be the highly-anticipated crossover between the Murder House and Coven seasons of the show.

As the title of the episode indicates, the end is nigh, and panic ensues within the first five minutes when news of a missile attack spreads around Los Angeles. A few elite souls manage to get to safety and, as the world falls apart, our survivors meet their new master (who just happens to be one of our central protagonists) Wilhemina Venable. A number of AHS' stellar cast members have returned for Season 8, which gave the show back its main event status.

Much of Apocalypse's premiere episode is focused on table-setting (quite literally, as most of the episode takes place around the dinner table) which - given the whole end-of-the-world premise - is understandable. Aside from one rather small issue, The End was the perfect opener for Apocalypse, and has set the stage for what promises to be one of AHS' strongest outings yet. Contains spoilers.
