Fake Doctors, Real Friends: 10 Things We Learned About Scrubs From Episode One
Reunited and it feels so good.
It's been 19 years since Scrubs first aired, and over the following eight seasons it grew to become a wonderfully popular show (the less said about season nine the better). Despite the often dark and dreary setting of a hospital, surrounded by sickness and death, it had this wonderful ability to make you laugh just seconds before making you cry.
Within the cast of characters, two stood out as the epitome of a good bromance. JD and Turk, friends since college, had the kind of friendship that is matched only by their real world counterparts, Zach Braff and Donald Faison.
Now, nine years after the show's final episode, the two BFFs have joined forces once again and created the Fake Doctors, Real Friends podcast. The weekly show will see Zach and Donald dissect episodes of Scrubs and talk about the behind the scenes stories and anecdotes that fans of the show won't want to miss.
Naturally, the first episode of the podcast focused on the first episode of the show, and from listening to the actors laugh, joke, and reminisce, we actually learned quite a lot about Scrubs even beyond the pilot.
10. Zach Braff Was Still Waiting Tables When He Got The Part
Back when Scrubs was still in pre-production, the majority of the main cast had at least some big roles under their belts. Donald Faison had Clueless, Sarah Chalke had Rosanne, and John C. McGinley had a long list of impressive roles on his CV.
Zach Braff however was a complete unknown. He had been a part of a couple of independent movies that had made it into Hollywood cinemas, but was still making his living waiting tables in a French-Vietnamese restaurant. Even then people would go to see his movie, then go to the restaurant for dessert and be served by the actor they'd just seen.
When he received the good news that he would soon be portraying Dr. John Dorian on Scrubs, he called his manager to quit. Despite being so supportive she still insisted that he work his shift that night. Really, it could have been a lot worse than a one-night notice period for Braff, so he did his duty - not before getting completely hammered and having some fun with the guests, however.
According to Donald Faison, when Zach Braff hits the booze, he hits it hard.
