The phenomenal success of the Game of Thrones television show is a testament to just how spellbinding the story is. Audiences, having experienced the most ambitious and game-changing season to date, are faced with the prospect of waiting an entire year for a fresh batch of episodes.

In the long wait for season 4, now would be the best time to get started on the books; commonly referred to as A Song of Ice and Fire. As someone who started reading only after watching the first season, I can personally attest to the benefits that come from experiencing both versions of the story.

This article will refer to events that occur in the television show, so make sure you€™re up to date before reading. Book spoilers will not be addressed.

5. George RR Martin Is A Gifted Writer

From page one; Martin grabs your attention as he takes you on a whirlwind tour of Westeros and its people. Even the way he structures the book is interesting. There is clearly no conventional main protagonist. Audiences are left to decide who to root for in this epic saga. Each chapter is told through the perspective of a different character. This is great for the reader because it€™s a very intimate technique that makes the characters more vivid. Watching Ned get his head cut off is devastating for us as viewers; watching it on the small screen. Experiencing that event through his daughter's perspective on the page is a little more heartbreaking.

In addition to Martin€™s superior penmanship, you€™ll get little insights into the world of Westeros that the show may not be able to address. You€™ll learn about the Starks and their history in the North, as well as hints of what the kingdom was like during the reign of the mad king.
